It's grunge. Pretty common. Your best bet is to get some MicroTek Shampoo and Spray and treat it as directed on the bottle. Curry it gently a little bit each day. It's ok if it bleeds a little bit, but be gentle and if it bothers your horse, stop for the day. To prevent it from coming back, be sure to clean your horse's legs on a regular basis and dry them with a towel when wet.

Its rain rot my mare got it on the back of her legs
pull it all out and scrub the area with anti fungal shampoo and water sc then rinse thouroughly and put some mtg on the areas, on bleeding areas put some ointment on and if there is any fur left scruff it up like a teddy bear and let it dry in the sun.

The most common cause of stuff on the horse's back legs are body oils from when he or she lies down. The private parts have lots of oil and it gets on the legs when the legs are tucked under him/her.
The thing that will clean it would be a gentle cleaner, like shampoo, or goop, or even Tide.
Be gentle because the skin is very tender. You don't want your horse's legs to bleed.

its rain rot. my 8 month old colt had it on all of his legs. his is from being in a wet pasture. their isnt alot of rain but the morning dew on the grass is what caused his. our grass in the pasture is very tall which is the only reason my colt got it only on his legs. we washed him in a diluted iodine mixture and it cleared up after 2 washes.

When i bought my bulb it was okay then sfter by accident i knocked over the bulb from its pot then i removed the bulb and saw fungus on the bottom of the bulb, so i just replanted it, if i don't water the bulb will the fungus die?
