I understand that rhododendrons create a fungus which poisons other plants?

saw a programme on tv on how rhododendrons are destroying the natural habitat in many parts of britain by making the soil poisonous to other plants. I am making a new garden and last year planted a couple should i remove themI understand that rhododendrons create a fungus which poisons other plants?
Very good screen name pH.

I have grown Rhodos for years without any problems to other plants nearby.

I am sure you know Rhodos require an acidic soil to thrive and if your garden has a low pH then lime loving plants will not be able to cope.

I did not see the programme you mention and only know about R.ponticum which grows like a weed and competes so well against native plants it is causing a serious problem.I understand that rhododendrons create a fungus which poisons other plants?
The falling leaves make the ground to acid for most other plants and as the rhododendron propergates its self by layering its branches it can take over ground very fast.
its not a fungus their leaves when they eventually rot make the soil very acidic which deters a lot of plants from growing.
If they are smallish and growing in tubs.NO but if they're in the ground YES.
I think you should get your facts right They can get a disease that can destroy other trees ie oak trees. If you go on a site for defra you will find out all about it
