How does fungus grow inside the camera?

I just wanna know how does the fungus thing work and what ways are to be taken to prevent it.How does fungus grow inside the camera?
Hi,

First thing, fungus is fungus, not a bacteria.

I just bought a lens on line and when I first looked inside it the centre element was plastered in the stuff. (Seller refunded me). It looked as though the fungus started off in the lens from a tiny insect which had died in there. Presumably the insect walked the spores in. Fungal spores are everywhere and travel in the air just like dust so you can get them inside your lens with or without an insect. You have absolutely no chance of avoiding them.

As other contributors say, you will be fine if you keep the lens dry, the spores have to have moisture to start growing. Once they start growing they will feed off organic matter from the air which comes from more dust or organic matter dissolved in the moisture in the air. The fungus which grows in lenses is well known (Google for it) and as it grows it forms a network of fine filaments. (A mycelial mat is the technical term.) Once the growth has started some fungii can take in water from the air to support their own needs so as long as they can find food they are on to a winner.

When a fungus 'realises' that you are drying it out and it will not survive any longer it will use its last moments to produce millions of spores which can resist total dessication for years. (put simply). For this reason, if you have a lens with fungus infestation get rid of it fast. Incinerate it. If you keep it in your camera bag it will infect all your kit. Yes you can stop the fungus by desiccating it but this is not helpful to eradicate it.

I have seen reports which say the fungus damages the lens coating which means it is no use stripping, cleaning and re-building the lens. May be the fungus is using the minerals in the lens coating.

There are reports claiming the UV light in sunlight will kill fungi. So it will but very little UV light passes through ordinary glass and definitely not through thick window glass. If a lens is made from a quartz glass then UV may be able to get inside if it is placed in direct sunlight. You can shine UV light on an ordinary glass lens all day and it is not going to get inside the lens where the fungus is living. My guess is that the only benefit of keeping a lens on a window sill is that it is kept dry.

Hope this helps. How does fungus grow inside the camera?
your batteries are probable leaking.
if water gets in the camera, and if it sort of heats up a little, then the conditions are right for fungus. the fungus thrives in dark warm areas and it is spawned by the bacteria in the water. So thats how you grown fungis in the camera.

Just keep your camera away from water and dirt and stuff.
Humidity helps fungus form, keep your camera in a dry place when not in use. Use Desiccant Silica Crystal Crystals when storing the Camera.

Try not to use in High Humidity or Wet environments.

Fungus thrives in moist, warm, and dark climates.
