What are the benefits of using fungus for penicillin production as opposed to any other microbe?

Also could or was any other microbe for the production of penicillin ever thought of?What are the benefits of using fungus for penicillin production as opposed to any other microbe?
The Penicillium fungi that produces penicillin benefits from it by limiting bacteria from being able to compete with it. The fungi naturally occurs in soils and on organic materials where it breaks them down. Bacteria are often competing with this fungus so it developed a way to be able to kill them off.

No other microbe was thought of for the production of penicillin because it was really the fungi's idea in the first place, humans just discovered a way we could use it. Other fungi and microbes however have been discovered that also produce antibiotics that we now use.
